  • Synapse Group Inc. (Stamford, CT) has secured a patent for the “Universal Questionnaire” qualification process used on its Freebizmag.com Web site. The site pairs qualified readers with free subscriptions to controlled titles based on their answers to a series of targeted questions.   • Direct Media (Greenwich, CT) has launched five online forums for list industry professionals to share ideas and information on consumer catalogs, consumer publishing, business-to-business, international and fund-raising.   • RealRead (New York, NY), a provider of online book sampling software, now offers publishers a service to produce online magazines that replicate their print counterparts.   • William S. Rubin, founder and president of Rubin Response Services, Inc. of Schaumburg, IL, died on September 18. A pioneer in the list business and a champion for marketing education, Rubin founded the company with his wife, Arlene, in 1974. RRS, which offers list brokerage, management and consulting services, now has 75 employees.
